Greens welcome new safety fence for Palmer Park

Following on from Green lobbying the Council has installed a fence between Palmer Park and the Wokingham Road near to the play area. Greens say this will make the park safer.

Parents raised concerns with the Green Party about there not being a boundary fence on the Wokingham Road side of the park. This was the only side of the park not to have a fence. Parents were particularly concerned because there is a play area on this side of the park and whilst the play area is fenced there are often children playing outside of the fence.

Local Green campaigner Rob White contacted council officers on this issue, as well as raising it through the recent Palmer Park consultation.

Local parents Mark and Marina who first raised the issue with Rob said: "We and many of our friends with small children were worried about their safety when playing in this area of Palmer Park. It seemed extraordinary that safety railings existed all around the park except in the area where small children play most. It is a busy road and we are very happy that it will be safer for children to play in the park now. We knew that local Green Rob White was very active and had helped people out in the past so we raised it with him.

Rob White, who came within 20 votes of becoming Reading's first Green councillor at the last local elections, said: "Well done to the Council for listening on this issue and acting. Following on from initially raising this with the Council and them sounding positive I had not heard anything for a while, so I was starting to wonder if it was still going ahead. But on my cycle past today I noticed the fence had finally arrived. Not only will it make the area safer, but I think it looks rather nice."
