Letter - Political Spin

Recent letters to the local papers reveal the lack of respect some politicians have for the people of Reading. Last week Cllr Merriott tried to present Rob White as misrepresenting Labours transport plicy, when that is precisely what she is doing. The surprise is that she is willing to get caught with such an obvious lie, after this will anyone trust anything else she has to say?
Martin Salter has been both for and against so many issues, who can say where he really stands on anything anymore. The list of his flip flopping includes; the Iraq War, Post Office closures, building on the flood plane at Kennet Valley Park, a revolt over education and airport expansion. He presented himself as against hunting but supports killing birds and shooting animals. Last year he even accused Polish people of stealing fish, while his party were trying to attract Polish voters. There’s the broken promise of a referendum over the constitution for Europe, it was redefined as a treaty (though it was more than 90% the same). And now a U turn and backbench rebellion over the cutting of the 10p tax, one year after it happened, and just before an election. Not to mention; MP’s expenses, Northern Rock, data loss and Olympic fiasco.
Last year a Labour candidate claimed that the Green Party "weren‘t being green" by being "anti-the IDR". Only someone determined to lie and spin would pretend that spending money on building roads was Green. We would invest in sustainable transport; better and cheaper buses, improved cycle facilities and pedestrian routes.
Reading was recently listed as one of the worst offenders for carbon emissions in the country, but if you believe recent Labour ‘Banners‘ they are leading in emissions reductions. People are waking up to their distance from the truth and their days in power are coming to an end. Labour, tough on our liberties, even tougher on manipulating statistics.
One World, One Chance, Vote Green on May the 1st.
