Tweedledum and Tweedledem

Revelations that Nick Clegg was a member of the Cambridge University Conservative Association (CUCA) when he was a student are startling. When I was a student at Cambridge in the 1980s all sane peopl knew that CUCA was to be avoided like the plague, as it was full of self-regarding, right-wing Tory lizards. It is disturbing that the new Lib-Dem leader should ever have found such company congenial, but it does explain his similarity to David Cameron, I suppose.
Here in Reading we have our own shape-shifter, in the form of Rob Wilson MP, who started his political career as a local candidate for the SDP (now the Lib-Dems, of course). A pattern seems to be emerging here. As the Tories move closer to the centre, they are occupying the same ground as the Lib-Dems. Their policies (both nationally and locally) are amazingly similar - just look at their transport plans. So when will the two merge?
While we all welcome the demise of Labour, it would be a disaster if Tweedledum and Tweedledem were to govern Reading by default. All the more reason for making every effort to get our first Green councillor on 1 May!
